Jack Green says his storming run to help the GB 4x400m relay team into the Olympic Final has ‘half made-up for’ the disappointment of his 400m hurdles exit.
The 20-year-old star ran a blistering third leg to slingshot the home favourites from third to first in time for Martyn Rooney to anchor GB through.
Green’s performance drew the loudest reaction from the crowd of any morning session at these Games and should have cemented his place in the team for the final at 9.20pm on Friday.
Snodland-born Green said that while he was ‘still gutted’ about his semi-final exit in the hurdles, when he crashed to the track after hitting hurdle three: "It was nice to come here and kind of make up for that."
He added: "I’ve only half made up for it. I’ve got to run well tomorrow as well if I’m in the team. I’d like to think I’ve done enough, I thought I out us in a good place but I’m not in charge of the team."
Green's split time for his 400m was 44.42secs - faster than any other Brit - who are all 400m runners - and third fastest in the entire heat, which included more than two-dozen 400m specialists.
The European under-23 hurdles champion said: "I felt good, I felt controlled actually, I feel like there’s a bit more there.
"I didn’t want to go off crazy. Especially after the anger I feel after the other day. I really wanted to start flying but it’s not best for the team and now I’m in a team sport."
He added: "I think if the relay was an individual event then that would be my event much better than the hurdles – and nothing to trip over half the time."
Green revealed his individual event disappointment made him question whether to just quit the Games altogether, he admitted: "I’ve kind of been in the middle.
"I still wanted to do the run but I kind of didn’t. It was quite difficult, I could have been like, stop, leave it there, but then it’s an Olympic Games in my country and I have the opportunity to try and win a medal so I’m going to do that."
He also heaped praise on the superb 80,000 crowd in the Olympic Stadium, saying: "To have this crowd for a morning session? It’s brilliant. You don’t get that anywhere else. It’s a big bonus. It’s great – for our sport and the Olympics.
"Hopefully it can continue through the Olympics and into other Championships."
