Decathlete Martin Brockman fell short of the Olympic qualifying standard in his final competition before the selection deadline for London 2012.
The 24-year-old from Maidstone faced an uphill battle at the Hexham Meeting in Northumberland across the weekend, needing to smash his personal best in almost every event to stand any chance of usurping Dan Awde as first in line for the one British place at the Olympics.
The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist began well with a PB of 11.25 in the 100m and then won the long jump with 7.18m before a shot put of 13.53m, winning the high jump with a leap of 1.99m and a 50.63 400m put him second at the midway stage.
On Sunday he began with a 110m hurdles time of 15.89 and could only throw 39.99 in the discus, but he won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.72m.
To finish off, Brockman threw 51.93 in the javelin and ran 4.38.49 in the 1,500m to take second overall with 7.484pts, 229 points behind winner Scott McLaren of New Zealand.
