The “very rare” title is on the market after the current Lord, who lives in Canada, decided he no longer needed it.

The purchaser will follow in the footsteps of 11 Kings of England.

Graham Fothergill, from nobility.co.uk, which is handling the sale, said: “This is an extremely rare title.

“I have been doing this for 16 years and can count on one hand the number of titles that have belonged to 11 kings.”

The title is recorded in the Domesday Book. It was held by 11 of the kings from Henry I to Edward VI.

“The current Lord lives in Canada and has held the title since 1985,” said Mr Fothergill, adding: "It would be nice to bring it back to a resident of Ashford.”
