Lucky escape after car plunges 25ft

TWO men managed to escape after a car crashed through railings and landed on its roof on the mud banks of the River Medway.

The car fell 25ft after the driver lost control and smashed through barriers on Rochester Esplanade.

Firefighters from Strood and Medway stations, ambulance crews, police and coastguards were called to the accident at around 9.30pm on Thursday.

The occupants, who were unharmed, had pulled themselves free from the car before firefighters arrived at the scene but a boat from Sheppey was called for support.

A spokesman for the Thames Coastguard said: "The driver said he was re-tuning the radio when he lost control of his car."

The car was later removed by police.
