Luke Rooney made his first Gillingham appearance for three months at Wycombe and it was a performance that impressed manager Andy Hessenthaler.

Rooney (pictured) came off the bench late in the game but with his first touch he almost created the equaliser for Cody McDonald. Only the crossbar denied the Gillingham forward.

The 20-year-old, who recently went out on loan to Eastbourne to get some first-team experience, could see more time on the pitch for the Gills if he keeps up Monday’s form.

"He looked fresh when he came on and he did well," said Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler.

"He is a player where, at that stage of the game, things can happen when they get on the ball.

"He has been a bit disappointed because he wants to play, he has been out on loan, but he just wants to play. The kid has some quality and that’s why we want him in and around the squad.

"He has to keep doing that and if he does then he may force himself into the team."
