Luke Rooney could be in line for a starting role for Gillingham in the near future.
The 20-year-old has not started a League 2 game this season but recent impressive substitute appearances have increased his chances.
"He comes on and starts to make things happen because the kid is electric," said Andy Hessenthaler.
"He has so much ability and is starting to force a chance of maybe starting games soon."
Rooney almost scored against Northampton last weekend, only being denied by keeper Chris Dunn.
Hessenthaler added: "He doesn’t want to be labelled as a substitute but he just has to keep doing what he’s doing because he is definitely knocking on the door."
