Luke Rooney continued his impressive pre-season form with a hat-trick on Friday night in the 4-1 win at Bishop’s Stortford.

Rooney (pictured) opened the scoring from the penalty spot and added a goal in each half.

It took Rooney’s summer scoring record to six goals in six games but boss Andy Hessenthaler knows the youngster still has plenty to learn.

The Gills manager said: "The kid frustrated me a bit on Friday before we got the penalty and he knows he did.

"He is such an infectious boy and such a good footballer but he tries to force things and tries to get things done too quickly.

"All of a sudden he got his goal and he was a livewire and he did everything great. He deserved his hat-trick for his work rate and I love him. He is my type of player.

"He gives everything and he wants the ball. Sometimes we have to calm him down because, a bit like Danny Spiller, he wants to do everything and sometimes they want to win the war on their own. That’s where you can fall down."
