Actress and Gurkha veterans' campaigner Joanna Lumley was the guest of honour at the Guston Primary School fete near Dover on Saturday.

The school has many pupils from the Nepalese community who live nearby, and head teacher Deby Allen thanked Miss Lumley for all her work and support for the Gurkhas and their families.

Describing her as a national treasure, Miss Allen thanked her on behalf of the school and of all the community.

Miss Lumley recalled the fact that she had spent a lot of time in Kent when she was young.

"I spent most of my growing-up years, when I came back from the Far East, in Kent," she said. "But I'm never quite sure whether I am a Maid of Kent or a Kentish Maid."

In between signing autographs and posing for photographs, Miss Lumley visited each of the stalls and chatted to the helpers and visitors.

She was presented with a bouquet by Abigayle Pearce and Radhika Limbu handed some balloons to her to be released to signify the official opening.

The band of the Dover Squadron of the Air Training Corps led the procession at the start of the fete and provided some of the entertainment.
