A striking new footbridge was succesfully installed over the M20 at Ashford this weekend.
Despite a slight delay because of the wind, workers bolted the final sections of the "landmark" suspension bridge into place at 3am this morning.
The motorway closure, which lasted from Saturday evening, caused a lot of traffic congestion in the town centre but the bridge was finished ahead of schedule.
Kent County Council project manager Andrew Burton said the installation had gone "exceedingly well".
"We finished two hours early so all the work we intended to do was done," he said.
"There was a slight delay on Saturday night because of the wind but it died down and by yesterday morning we had caught up."
It means that there will not have to be a second closure this weekend but traffic will be diverted off the motorway at junction 9 every night this week while hand rails and lighting is installed.
Motorists will have to come off and drive around the roundabout before driving back onto the motorway.
The 100m bridge was installed to allow pedestrians and cyclists to pass safely over the M20 to the Eureka Leisure Park.
The project was funded by £8.1million from the Department for Transport and £2.5million Growth Area funding from Ashford's Future.
