Parts of the M20 could be used to test plans for a new 80mph speed limit.
Although no final decisions have been made, it's thought a section of the motorway, which runs all the way from the M25 to Folkestone, could be used to trial the idea.
Plans to look at raising the speed limit were first announced last October because the government thinks the current 70mph restriction is out of date because improvements in technology mean cars are a lot safer.
Roads Minister Mike Penning said: "The Department is carrying out work to assess the potential economic, safety and environmental impacts of trialling 80mph speed limits on motorways where variable limits are currently in place.
"This work is on-going and no final decisions have yet been taken about which stretches of motorway would be included in any proposed trial.
"We plan to bring forward detailed proposals and start consultation during the next few months."
It's believed the M20 would be more likely to be chosen, as it already has a variable speed limit.
The M20 has a variable speed limit section between junctions 4 (West Malling) and 7 (Detling), and in 2010 became one of only three motorways in the UK where police can alter the speed vehicles are allowed to travel.
If any change to the speed limit is given the go-ahead it could be brought in by early 2013.
