Major sporting event returns to Maidstone

You may have only just finished getting the gunk out of your hair from last year but plans are already in the mixer for this year’s World Custard Pie Championships.

It will be held splat bang in the middle of Detling, at the Kent Showground, on Sunday, June 15, and it promises to be as messy.

Four decades ago people flocked from far and wide to try their hand at hurling puds under the strict rules of the 1967 Coxheath Custard Pie Convention.

It was the brainchild of young councillor Mike FitzGerald who later become Mayor of Maidstone.

Several custard free years followed until Lib Dem councillors David Naghi and Brian Mortimer resurrected it last year.

The great pie throwers of bygone years come out of hiding, and blood, sweat and tears were shed before a team from Ethos in Maidstone finally emerged victorious.

News of the resurrection reached Japan, China and the USA.

Extra policing charges means the championship will move from Mote Park, to The Kent Showground,

Cllr Naghi said: “We’ve latched it on to The Rotary Funday so we can get on with having a great day.

“It was a complete success last year, we had worldwide coverage including a slot halfway through the news bulletin on Arab broadcaster al-Jazeera.”

Spectators at this year’s event will get to see The Kent Welly Throwing Championships and The National Skipping Championship as well as the main attraction.

The day will start at 9.30am and finish at 4.30pm. Entry costs £40 per team, for more details contact Martin Cox on 01622 688945 or 07970 723975.
