LEARNING the art of good driving in wet weather needs preparation and a little knowledge, says breakdown organisation Autonational Rescue.
One of the best ways to avoid an accident is to make sure your car can cope with the rigours of the rainy season, with wipers working well, firm brakes and good tyre tread. When the road surface is slippery, even the best tyres can lose their grip, so always:
* Allow more braking distance between you and the vehicle in front.
* Scrap any tyres you have with cuts, tears, bald patches and bulges.
* Regularly check your tyres’ pressure, not forgetting the spare.
Ronan Hart, Autonational spokesman, said: “I don’t think most people understand the difference that tyres can make to safety, especially when driving in the wet. We would recommend that drivers only ever use quality tyres on their cars, which in the end will pay dividends in terms of safety and fuel consumption.”
The organisation is also reminding motorists about the perils of flooding. The message is clear - don’t drive through floodwater if you can avoid it. It just might be deeper than you think. However, if you have no alternative, drive slowly in first or second gear keeping the revs high.
But if you are unlucky enough to have stalled in serious floodwaters, get out and get to safety quickly.
After being “assaulted” by floodwaters, your vehicle’s brakes, engine, steering and transmission systems will most likely be damaged. You should not try to re-start it until the car has been professionally checked and cleaned by a qualified garage mechanic.
Ronan Hart added: “The best advice that anyone can give in wet weather conditions is to take it easy.”
