A 90-year-old man is fighting for his life after a crash with an ambulance this morning.

The driver is being treated in hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries following the smash in Tonbridge.

The ambulance was on an emergency call when it was involved in a collision with a car in Cornwallis Avenue.

The elderly man was taken to The Tunbridge Wells Hospital, but an injured ambulance worker did not require hospital treatment.

South East Coast Ambulance Service has launched an investigation into the incident at about 10.40am.

Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Service were also called to the scene.

The road was closed in both directions between Three Elm Lane and Higham Lane for almost eight hours until about 5.30pm.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "SECAmb can confirm that one of its ambulances was involved in a road traffic collision with another vehicle on A26 at Cornwallis Avenue, Tonbridge, shortly after 10.40am this morning.

"The driver of the car, a man aged in his 90s, was taken to Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury with potentially life-threatening injuries.

"A SECAmb member of staff travelling in the ambulance was also injured but did not require hospital treatment.

"The ambulance was not carrying any patients but was en-route to a call in the area at the time of the collision. Another vehicle was assigned to attend this call.

"Road traffic collisions involving SECAmb vehicles are rare but we take safety extremely seriously and are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident."
