A man is due in court after he allegedly shot and killed a rare seagull which was nesting on his neighbour's roof.

Richard Suckling, 45, allegedly killed the Herring Gull near his home in Williamson Road, Lydd-on-Sea, on June 21.

Police said it was a rare variety of the breed.

Suckling was charged last Thursday with shooting a wild bird and firing an air weapon beyond the boundary of his premises.

He will appear before Ashford magistrates on October 20.
