A road in a Kent town was completely closed off after reports a woman had been assaulted.

Specialist police officers, including trained negotiators, were called to the scene in Alexandra Street, Folkestone, at around 12.20am on Thursday.

Police are describing it as a "domestic incident".

A 49-year-old man handed himself over to police shortly before 8am. He was arrested and is currently in custody.

Meanwhile, police are guarding a taped off area in Singleton, Ashford.

Officers were called to an incident on a grassed piece of open space in Tithe Barn Lane, next to Manorfield, at about 11pm Wednesday.

Police say a woman in her late 30s was punched in the face by a man who also tried to grab her handbag while she was walking home.

He is described as around 6ft tall and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top.

A forensic investigation of the scene is taking place.
