ARMED police officers surrounded a public house following reports that threats had been made with a handgun.

An initial incident was alleged to have taken place just after midday on Tuesday on the forecourt of the Ashwal Garage at Wilsey Pound, Sissinghurst, near Cranbrook.

The incident is believed to have involved two customers at the garage and did not involve the garage staff.

Just over half an hour later police, including an armed response unit and police dogs, surrounded the Knoxbridge Inn, a short distance along the road.

The road there was closed and a man was arrested. He is being questioned by police. No gun has been found.

The pub has been closed for refurbishment for the past three months. John Crittenden, whose wife and son, also called John, are the licensees at the pub, said the incident was something the family could well do without.

He said: “I have nothing against the police. They have to do their job. But nothing was found and this sort of thing doesn’t do business any good.”

One motorist, travelling from Staplehurst to Cranbrook, who was among those caught up in the road closure, said: “It was quite worrying. There was a police officer with a sub-machine gun outside the pub.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the alleged offence to come forward and would particularly like to speak to a driver who was on the forecourt of the Ashwal Garage at the time of the incident. It is believed he was driving a white works van.
