A man was slashed in the face in a horrific street attack.

It happened at Red Lion Square, Hythe, on Saturday evening.

Emergency services were called and the victim, in his 50s, was taken to hospital.

Local photographer Max Hess, who was at the scene shortly after the incident, said: "I had heard from police that the victim's injuries were serious but not life threatening.

"Police taped off the bus stop in Military Road and the entry road and footpath to Findlay Court.

"A forensic officer was also there."

The weapon used is specifically understood to have been a knife rather than another form of sharp object.

One man was due in court on Monday charged with grievous bodily harm after the incident.

Mark Stephens, 52, of Satmar Lane, Capel le Ferne, was scheduled to appear before Folkestone magistrates.

Police say a 65-year-old man from Hythe was also arrested in connection with the incident but was not charged and released from police custody on Sunday.
