A 57-year-old man was remanded in custody by Canterbury magistrates charged with raping a woman in the city 22 years ago.

James Robertson, of Rishton, Lancashire, is also accused of indecent assault, unlawful imprisonment and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

All the charges relate to an incident in Canterbury on August 22, 1988.

His arrest follows a re-investigation of the offences by Kent Police’s Cold Case Investigation Team.

The case was adjourned to Canterbury Crown Court on March 22.
