Man dies after altercation in street

A 25-year-old man has died in hospital after being fatally attacked in the street.

Edward Jones, from Bexleyheath, was assaulted in Lovel Avenue, Welling, in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich but died on Monday afternoon.

Mr Jones was with a group that became involved in an altercation with a number of men in Welling's Central Avenue at about 1.30am on Sunday. Detectives say that minutes later he was attacked in nearby Lovel Avenue.

Police have not yet revealed the nature of his injuries. A post mortem examination was due to be held today.

Det Chief Insp Will O'Reilly says he is keeping an open mind about the motive behind the attack. An incident room has been set up.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Monday and remains in custody.
