A man has died after being hit by a train at a level crossing in Whitstable.

Trains between Faversham and Ramsgate were suspended following the incident at the Glebe Way crossing just before 1pm today.

The train was travelling coastbound at the time and it's the third death at the crossing in two months.

Simon Letouze from British Transport Police said: "Officers from BTP and Kent Police attended the incident, which was reported at 12.59pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Mike Moulden, 17, had been travelling on the train to Birchington.

Speaking as he waited to board a replacement bus, he said: “I heard the thud and instantly knew something bad had happened.

“We were told to be patient and then about 15 minutes later they put an announcement out saying the train had hit someone.

“It’s pretty much what we had all been thinking anyway.”
