Man dies after being struck by car on A28 near Canterbury

A man has died in a road accident between Canterbury and Thanet overnight.

The 50-year-old pedestrian, believed to be from Canterbury, died after the collision on the A28 just outside Upstreet.

Police are appealing for people who may have seen the accident around 0.20am to come forward with information.

PC Guy Ditcher of the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The man was walking along the westbound carriageway when he was in collision with a red Ford Ka which was travelling from the Canterbury direction towards Sarre."

The man was taken to the QEQM Hospital in Margate with multiple injuries but died shortly after 5am.

The driver of the Ka, a man in his 30s from Sheppey, and his passenger, a woman in her 30s from Thanet, were not injured.

PC Ditcher added: "This collision happened in a rural location with no pavement or street lighting. We are appealing for anyone who may have seen the man, who was wearing dark clothing, walking along the road last night to call us, so we can piece together what happened."

The road was closed until just after 5.30am this morning while the crash was investigated and the vehicle was recovered.

Anyone with information should call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit appeal line on 01622 798538.
