A MAN has been sentenced for his part in a drink fuelled brawl in Bromley High Street.

Danny Jaques, 21, repeatedly hit Christopher Evans over the head with a bottle after his brother became embroiled in a fight with Evans and a girl, Bromley Magistrates' Court heard.

Evans, a bar supervisor, took off his jacket, grabbed Jaques' brother and held him in a headlock as the pair tumbled onto the street outside Woolworths.

CCTV cameras captured Jaques wading in brandishing a bottle.

During his trial, he said it had been a plastic water bottle.

He admitted drinking and said that he had been acting in defence of his brother.

Magistrates found Jaques guilty of assault by beating last month, saying his actions had not been reasonable or proportionate.

Roger Haw, defending, told the sentencing hearing: "He was acting in defence of himself and his brother but he went too far."

He added: "It would be wholly unsavoury if an award of compensation was made to Mr Evans."

Magistrates sentenced Jaques, of Lavender Close, Bromley, to 120 hours unpaid work in the community and ordered him to pay £400 legal costs.

Chair of the bench, Mr Hersee, said: "We have seen no evidence at all of the extent of injuries to the victim and therefore we are making no compensation award in this court."

Evans was cautioned by police for his part in the fracas.
