A man has been airlifted to a London hospital with severe injuries after an accident with a chainsaw.

The man is thought to have severed his leg while cutting a hedge on the A20 Ashford Road, Bearsted, at about 12.15pm.

It is thought the man was cutting down trees when the accident took place.

The road was closed both ways for an hour to allow the Kent Air Ambulance to land but has now reopened.

The Health and Safety Executive for Kent has been informed.

George Tyler, 70, of Ashford Road, said: “The helicopter landed in the back garden of a house a few doors away from me, and I thought someone there had been hurt, but then paramedics were running across the road.

“One of the men from the contractors in the front garden on the other side had been badly injured.

"They blocked off all the traffic in both directions. I was a bit shocked by it all.”
