Gillingham are chasing another record after extending their unbeaten away run to 10 games.

Just weeks after setting a new record for away wins in the league – with an 11th of the season at Chesterfield – the Gills are now in line to break a record that has stood since 1974.

Andy Nelson’s Division 4 promotion-winners went 10 away games without defeat in the 1973-74 season and Martin Allen’s side equalled that run with a draw at Aldershot on Saturday.

They could now beat it if they avoid defeat in Exeter next Tuesday.

“I’ll be getting all Roy Castle with my old trumpet,” said Gills boss Martin Allen, referring to the man who presented the Record Breakers programme on television.

“That’s nice for all the record books but that’s not my business. My business is for Mr Scally and the supporters and to get enough points for our players and to help our players.”

The current run of form is in stark contrast to recent times, where the team went 34 games without an away win – stretching almost a year and a half, from May 2, 2009 to November 20, 2010 – which included the whole of the 2009-10 season.
