Four goals and a clean sheet kept Gillingham top of League 2 on Saturday but boss Martin Allen was not satisfied.

The Gills host last season’s play-off semi-finalists Southend on Tuesday night at Priestfield and Allen believes his team need to improve.

"I’ve told the players in the changing room that they are going to have to play better," said Allen.

"They have to pass it quicker and get it moving around the pitch on Tuesday when we play Southend because they are a good team and this is the sort of game where we have to put down a good performance."

The Gills extended their unbeaten start to the season to six games with a 4-0 victory over Bristol Rovers to leave them three points clear at the top of the table. Striker Danny Kedwell struck twice – but even he needs to show more, according to the Gills boss.

Allen said: "I asked for more from him in the dressing room (after the game) if I am honest. He still has to do better, to do more and I said that to both of the centre-forwards, they have to do better. They have to make us better.

"Kedwell has got a good (goal) return so far but everyone in the squad is playing their part and we all have to keep looking to get better and to improve."

"The other thing is we have another good player in Ben Strevens who has been absolutely fantastic in training. He has had two promotions in the last few years and it’s good to have him to come on."
