Gillingham are heading into their biggest games of the season with just one recognised central defender.
Inexperienced teenager Tom Wynter is the only genuine centre-back left in Mark Stimson’s squad as the Gills prepare for games against Leeds, Norwich and Southampton in successive weekends.
Gillingham have just four games left to save themselves from relegation, finishing with a trip to Wycombe, and must face the three League 1 heavyweights with a patched-up defence.
Stimson said: "It’s crazy. Who would have thought after keeping a clean sheet at home (against Southend) and everything going according to plan, that the heart of our defence would be ripped out?
"Whoever plays against Leeds will have to go out and give it a real good go because they will be tested. I’m sure whoever does will give it a try.
"That position has been an absolute curse for us. It’s been horrendous what we’ve had to go through."
Wynter is likely to be paired with makeshift centre-back Mark Bentley (pictured) for the visit of Leeds on Saturday.
Josh Gowling is suspended for the next two matches after Tuesday night’s sending-off against Brighton, Darren Dennehy is struggling with back spasms and a broken toe has now ruled Garry Richards out for the rest of the season along with Simon King.
The Gills are so short of numbers that boss Stimson is also considering recalling striker Jacob Erskine from a loan spell with Croydon Athletic as cover next week.
He has played in defence for the Ryman League side in recent weeks.
Forward Dennis Oli played at the back in the final few minutes at Priestfield on Tuesday and he is another option for Stimson. It’s a position he played in his younger days.
Youth players Callum Davies and Connor Essam have been put on standby to assist.
