Gillingham boss Mark Stimson is hoping Mark McCammon can perform and save him money in the process.

Stimson is on the hunt for another striker but McCammon’s recent displays have suggested that he may be able to keep the club’s chequebook closed.

McCammon (pictured) was a key player for Doncaster as they gained promotion from League 1 in 2008 and Stimson is hoping the big striker can have a similar impact for the Gills.

Stimson said: "He has really given himself a chance of a run in the team. I said to him, ‘don’t make me go and sign a striker. Let me save myself some money and get you firing here.’

"He is up for the challenge and he showed that on Tuesday and he showed it last Saturday when he came on. That’s the standard now and he needs to go and deliver."

Stimson changed the formation to 4-4-2 on Tuesday night, allowing McCammon to partner Simeon Jackson up front and is likely to do so again on Saturday.

"They linked up a couple of times quite well and the more they play together the better they will get," said Stimson.
