Gillingham boss Mark Stimson believes he could have found the winning formula for his side on the road.
Stimson switched formations for the trip to Exeter and, after an impressive performance earned an all too rare away point, he could have found the tactics needed to end an abysmal sequence of away results.
The Gills have still to win away from Priestfield and the point at Exeter doubled their tally in League 1 this season.
Stimson said: "The shape that we played at Exeter got us a hell of a lot of wins away from home last year."
Kevin Maher was dropped back to sit in front of the defence, while Simeon Jackson was on his own up-front with Dennis Oli and John Nutter offering support out wide.
"If you do it in the right way it’s not 4-5-1 it’s 4-3-3 and you can see that," said Stimson. "In the first half Dennis Oli and John Nutter were pushed right up against their full backs or centre halves and we were taking the game to them.
"With the two kids who have come in, Lewis and Toks (Yussuff), they’ve got great legs and great energy and with Kevin Maher sitting in there, it was a great one for us.
"It’s something we might do more often in the second half of the season."
