The attention to detail from people behind the scenes at Gillingham could give the side an edge this season, believes boss Martin Allen.

From the chef to the groundsman, the new manager has been delighted with the attitude and effort shown by people away from the limelight.

Allen (pictured) said: “The geezer that works at the ground, who was a kind of cook, has put together the best food in the last few weeks. I had moaned and asked him to change the food.

“He has gone from a cook to a chef and the players are getting proper food. They are not allowed to go home after training, they have to eat here and can’t leave until they have. Credit has to go to him.

“The geezer at the training ground who cuts the grass, he supports Wolves. He knows it’s no good just to have a single cut of the grass. We want it a double cut.

“It means you go down it one way and then the other and you get those lovely squares but the grass is short and sharp and it allows us to play passing football but it does mean more work.

Allen added: “It is that attention to detail and making sure there are no shortcuts. It’s about not being late and doing things properly and professionally.”
