Gillingham boss Martin Allen was unhappy to see his team picked apart in the second half by Wycombe.
The visitors attacked the Gills at will in the second 45 minutes and left Priestfield with maximum points.
Allen (pictured) said: “We started the game very well in the first half hour. We passed the ball and looked comfortable, then just before half-time we had a couple of tricky minutes and in the second half we didn’t play well enough.
“We were far too open and on the counter-attack they looked very dangerous. It was a disappointing second half.
“I won’t apportion blame to any of our players, it’s a team game and in the second half on the counter-attack they were dangerous. They had pace up front, they had some good attacking players, which we knew full well because I saw them play Dagenham a few weeks ago.
“They have got some talented players but we never got on top of them. They played well second half, but we didn’t and that’s obviously something we have to look at.”
Goalkeeper Stuart Nelson was named man-of-the-match after pulling off a string of saves but he couldn’t keep Wycombe out forever. They hit the winner with five minutes left.
“Stuart was outstanding and he needed to be,” admitted Allen.
“He’s had a fantastic season and I think we have got one of the best defensive records in the whole country, although you wouldn’t believe it after watching that. After watching that you would think that statement was absolutely crazy.
“We were far too open as a team. We let them have far too many opportunities at our goal and where we are in the league has been built on being hard to beat, difficult to beat and restricting the opposition to very few chances. That is a team, not individually, this is all of us.”
