Gills boss Martin Allen has dismissed suggestions that his team’s incredible start to the season will see him heading for the Priestfield exit door.
With the team sitting pretty at the top of League 2, the name of Martin Allen may be being bounced around the boardrooms of teams higher up the Football League than the Gills.
But Allen (pictured) insists that he will be keeping to the promise he gave to club chairman Paul Scally when he agreed a two-year deal with Gillingham.
Speaking before the trip to Port Vale, Allen said: "I made a promise to that chairman. I told him we would do really well when I met him and he grinned.
"He asked what would happen when all the speculation starts about moving to higher clubs, in the Championship and top of Division 1, because all of those clubs are going to want you (he said) and I promised him, I shook his hand, I squeezed it and went eye to eye with him and I said, ‘Mr Scally, I will stay here’.
"I have gone for the money in the past. This time I will stay and I will see it through – unless it’s Premier League – and he laughed.
"Let’s do this one, let’s get the job done and let’s not get carried away. We’re in this division because we are in it.
"It’s hard work to get out of it and there is a long, long way to go. We have a really good squad and I am very proud of all of the players and their drive and determination to make themselves better."
The win at Port Vale was Gillingham’s seventh in eight league games and saw them move six points clear in League 2.
