Residents, journalists and anyone with a connection to the internet can keep up-to-date with all of the latest Medway Council news by following it on Twitter.

The micro-blogging service allows people to ‘follow’ sources of information, such as news services, organisations or friends and relatives.

Twitter has also gained popularity by entertainers like Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry and was credited as having the American President Barrack Obama keep in touch with voters during last year’s election. Use of Twitter has trebled since the start of the year.

Medway Council’s Deputy Leader Cllr Alan Jarrett said: “It's important the council provides information to residents in a way that suits them - that's why we have set up this new service on Twitter to help us keep in touch with Medway's residents.

“The council continues to respond to developments in communications innovation; we already have a presence on sites including Facebook and MySpace.

"Twitter is another tool to ensure we continue to communicate with residents, while helping put Medway on the map by spreading information about news and events to a wider audience.”
