Are potholes driving you potty?
While out and about our reporting team have noticed an increasing number of holes, crevices and the occasional canyon appearing across the Medway Towns, which are no doubt causing motorists a bumpy ride.
Woodside in Wigmore, Deanwood Drive in Parkwood, Sturdee Avenue in Gillingham and Arthur Road in Rainham are just a few of the locations where large craters have been spotted in the road surface.
The recent freezing weather has not helped matters, according to Medway Council.
A spokesman said: “Medway Council’s highways team works hard to improve Medway’s roads and surfaces and the council plans to invest an additional £4 million in road and footpath resurfacing over the next two years.
“There has been an increase in potholes due to the recent freezing weather, which has caused water to freeze in minor cracks and then break the surface material.
“We are now catching up on the damage caused by the ice and snow.
“Medway Council will ensure all major potholes get temporary repairs, followed by permanent repairs.”
There are about 500 miles of roads in Medway which the council says are inspected at varying frequencies throughout the year.
The spokesman added: “High streets are inspected weekly, main roads monthly and minor residential side streets are inspected once a year.
“However, if the council receives a complaint about a road, an inspector will visit the site and if it is a hazardous defect then appropriate action will be taken.
“Every road in Medway is inspected in accordance with the current code of practice for highway maintenance.
“We will shortly be publishing our list of roads and pavements to be completely re-laid over the next two years but will of course still ensure any potholes are dealt with as speedily as possible.”
