KENT Police and the Highways Agency have met to discuss an assessment of safety measures on the newly-opened Sheppey Crossing.

The chief constable of Kent Police, Mike Fuller, said he was concerned about some aspects of the new bridge, which included the lack of speed limit, lighting, hard shoulders and emergency telephones.

This sparked a row between Kent Police and the Highways Agency, which maintains there is nothing wrong with the bridge.

However, the Department of Transport agreed with Kent Police to get traffic experts and highways specialist to meet to assess the situation.

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said: “Graham Link, the project manager, met with Kent Police to set out an agenda.

“This will be an ongoing assessment, with more meetings to come where Kent Police can highlight their concerns.”

Mr Fuller said local people and officers had raised the concerns with him and said “it would be irresponsible and unprofessional” for him not to act.
