It is set to start on Saturday night and lead into Sunday, with forecasters warning of potential power cuts, spray on the road and disruption to travel services.

Small village roads could also be flooded, with the potential for deep floodwater “causing danger to life”.

Earlier this week, a similar warning was put in place warning that a month’s worth of rain could fall within a day in Kent.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Areas of heavy and at times thundery rain are expected to spread across England and Wales from this evening and overnight.

“These areas of heavy rain may become more persistent across western areas during Sunday daytime whilst slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop further east.

“Rainfall amounts will vary considerably across the warning area with some locations seeing less than 10 mm of rainfall whilst others see 40-60 mm of rain.”
