Versatile midfielder Chris Palmer has left Gillingham to join League 2 rivals Burton.

Palmer was out of contract this summer but rejected the chance to stay at Priestfield after expressing a desire to return closer to his family's Midlands home.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler offered Palmer a deal to stay at the club but he was resigned to losing him. Palmer signed a two-year deal with Burton on Friday.

Burton manager Paul Peschisolido told Burton's official website: "Chris is a player that I have been chasing for two years. I really like the boy.

"He is experienced and what I really like about him is that he can play four or five different positions for us.

"He can play right side or left side and his delivery into the box is possibly the best in the league.

"Although he didn't play the entire season at Gillingham last term he still had more assists than anyone else down there."

Palmer scored five times in 20 games for the club last season but a knee injury picked up in training ended his campaign early. He has previously played for Walsall, Wycombe and Notts County after starting his career at Derby.
