Gillingham take on Wycombe on Tuesday night and manager Martin Allen expects Chris Whelpdale to be ready for a return.

The attack-minded midfielder (pictured) missed the weekend’s 3-1 victory against Bradford with a knock he picked up in the win over Bristol City in the Capital One Cup.

But Allen doesn’t see the injury keeping Whelpdale out for long.

Allen said: "A couple of our younger boys have got knocks but in the first team squad we had no injuries from Saturday and Whelps’ injury is relatively minor. He has got a little knock, he should be alright and that is the only one we have got."

Goalkeeper Ross Flitney is "coming on well" but still some way off returning. With few injuries of note it means Allen has been forced to leave some good players out. Striker Adam Birchall did not even make the squad on Saturday.

The Gills boss said: "Jack Payne was on the bench because he had been ill all week and there are a lot of players in the peripheries who can all go into the team and play.

"Ben Strevens was superb at Bristol City but I had to leave him out. I left Birchall out but on Monday last week he was absolutely brilliant in training and he was back to his best.

"It is a nice situation, not a problem, there are a lot of good players among our group."

Gillingham face a Wycombe team who also won on the opening weekend of the League 2 season, beating York 3-1. Their team at the weekend included ex-Gills players Leon Johnson, Stuart Lewis and Dennis Oli.

How difficult will it be for Martin Allen to keep all of his players happy? Have your say below.
