Danny Spiller's decision to stick with Gillingham for the next 18 months means he will need to do it the hard way if he wants League 1 football.

The popular midfielder, pictured, revealed he turned down offers from teams in the division above, preferring instead to help the Gills achieve their pre-season aim of promotion.

He said: "It’s nice to have a bit of security and know that I can settle and get my teeth into a long-term contract with Gillingham and help push us back into League 1.

"I want to be here 100 per cent, otherwise I wouldn’t have signed because there were other sides showing interest where I could have got a ticket back into League 1 this season.

"I opted to use Gillingham as my ticket back because I strongly believe we can be up there or thereabouts this season. I could have gone straight into League 1 but this club is for me. I’m looking forward to the next 18 months and even after that."

Spiller, 29, has played 160 games for the Gills and rejoined them in the summer after three years away.

Two of those were spent at Millwall, where a mis-diagnosed injury left him devoid of action, while last season he had brief spells at Wycombe and Dagenham.
