The Sports Minister and Kent MP Hugh Robertson has backed the FA over its decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy and says it had no choice other than to see Fabio Capello resign.
The MP said the FA was left with no option but to seek the resignation of Fabio Capello after he intervened and said to say he disagreed with the move by his employer.
"The FA had no option but to act in the way they did and given that, they have acted in entirely the right way.
"In purely practical terms, once the court case got pushed back beyond the European championships, it was going to be impossible for him [Terry] to carry out the duties of captain. It was purely practical factors that drove the decision," he said.
The issue of whether Terry could remain was not one just about what happened on the football field, he added. "It was perfectly reasonable for the FA to take that decision."
On Capello's reaction and decision to resign this week, he said: "Capello behaved very badly. He quite deliberately stoked a row and left the FA with no option."
He said the next manager should be "the best person for the job" and not necessarily an Englishman.
"I have a view that what England fans want most is to win tournaments so the FA must select the right person who is most likely to deliver success.
"I absolutely understand the desire to have an English manager, particularly after the Capello experience but the crucial thing is to get the right person."
