Science minister David Willetts pledged the government's support in securing the future of the Pfizer site in a visit to the Sandwich laboratories today.

The Tory minister and Sandwich MP Laura Sandys were shown around operations hub, building 500, before being briefed on the exit of the pharmaceutical giant by senior vice president and site head Dr Ruth McKernon.

He said: "I want to make it clear how committed the government is in trying to make sure we have a successful future for the activities within this site."

During his visit, the minister watched as scientists worked on cell manufacture.

He also met with senior managers.

He said the only pressures the Government can impose are to ensure Pfizer plays its part in encouraging other firms to move to the site and to help the 2,400 employees who will lose their jobs find new positions.

As yet, he can not confirm whether there will be money set aside from central Government, although the dedicated task force - set up to tackle the economic effects - will be run by Kent County Council and its leader Cllr Paul Carter.

"Everyone knows money is very tight. If there is a specific use, then that can be done, but if there is a specific use for something that needs national support, I can't make a commitment.

"We can work with Pfizer to make sure that the excellent research facilities continue to be at the service of other drug companies throughout the world."

As well as the purpose-built buildings that were built for the Pfizer boom, some valuable pieces of equipment will remain to attract other drug research companies to move in to east Kent, and hopefully ease the unemployment burden.

Media spokeswoman for Pfizer Louise Clark said: "Pfizer want to make it clear they won't be unscrewing every fixing."
