Extra police officers will be on the beat at the weekends to ensure people can socialise safely.

Medway Police have made more resources available to provide an extra presence at hot spots around the Towns on Friday and Saturday nights.

Ch Insp Iain Mackenzie said: “Recent figures have proven that crime related to Medway’s night-time economy is very low, with less than 10 incidents reported every weekend.

“This is a great achievement considering that an estimated 15,000 additional people come to Medway every weekend.

“However, we are determined to provide the public with added reassurance through visible policing.”

“Kent Police in Medway will be working with partner agencies to co-ordinate this initiative and help make Medway even safer.

“We want to encourage people to enjoy socialising safely, by acting responsibly and sensibly.

“The Safer Medway Intervention Team will see officers working alongside licensing teams from Kent police in Medway and Medway council to target hotspots on a Friday and Saturday night. The teams will be there to act as support for those people in Medway who need police assistance at weekends.

“Kent Police in Medway will still have the usual resources in place but with a bigger presence we hope to make residents and visitors feel even safer.”

The team has started work this month and will be operating every weekend in various locations across Medway.
