Kent braced for more flooding as Environment Agency issues warnings for county and roads closed

Strong winds and heavy rain are battering Kent again today - and there are fears of even more flooding.

The Environment Agency still has three flood warnings in force for the county as well as several flood alerts.

The official warnings - which mean flooding is expected and immediate action required - cover the River Medway, River Beult and River Stour.

It comes after more flooding in Kent over the weekend, where roads in villages and towns including Bearsted were left under water.

The Environment Agency said the areas still at risk today are the:

  • River Medway between Hampstead Lock and Allington Lock
  • River Beult from Pluckley and Bethersden to Hampstead Lock
  • River Stour between Grove Ferry and Plucks Gutter

It added continuing rain could swell already-overflowing rivers and lead to flooding on heavily-saturated ground.

More heavy rain and gale-force winds on the coast are expected today.

The Met Office issued the county with a severe weather warning for wind and rain until tomorrow.

It said strong winds of up to 70mph will combine with large waves to bring the risk of coastal flooding.

Meanwhile, Bob Dunn Way in Dartford remains closed east-bound because of flooding.

The carriageway has been shut between Marsh Street and the M25 junction at Swanscombe since Friday afternoon.

Other roads in Yalding, which was badly affected by the Christmas floods, remain closed today - including Mill Lane and Vicarage Road.

West Street in Hunton is also closed because of flooding, which has also affected New Road Road in Sutton Valence.
