Icy roads, a hard frost and freezing fog created treacherous driving conditions across the county this morning.

Police say they were called to more than 20 accidents on the county's roads as drivers were caught out by plummeting dawn temperatures.

Across the county mid Kent was worst hit and the Highways Agency were forced to re-grit many roads in an effort to alleviate the problem.

Drivers were warned to avoid the A249 between Stockbury and Maidstone after an accident at 7.10am closed the road.

The car's driver is not thought to have been injured, but the incident left diesel on the icy carriageway, making conditions even worse.

The road reopened at 9.30am

A2 - Whitfield

Officers were also called to the Whitfield bypass on the A2 coastbound carriageway at 8.45am.

A Peugeot car had come off the road due to a fuel and coolant spill.

Firefighters attended to make the scene safe.

Blue watch manager Tony Northcott said the crew had to disconnect the vehicle's battery and throw soil over the spill.

Drivers have been warned not to make journeys unless strictly necessary, and to check weather forecasts before travelling.
