AN INVESTIGATION is under way after the mother of a two-year-old girl discovered a caterpillar in a burger from Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Lily Petrie had only eaten the bun of her mini fillet burger when her mother, Rachel, found the creature among the lettuce and mayonnaise.
She was about to finish her daughter’s children’s meal when she made the discovery in the Chatham High Street restaurant, last Saturday afternoon.
Rachel, of Dale Street, Chatham, said: “I saw something grey hidden under the lettuce and covered with mayonnaise. When I looked closer, I saw it was a whole caterpillar. I felt so angry and sick. I immediately took it to a manager.
“They apologised and offered my daughter another burger, but I am never going to feed her, or any other member of my family, KFC again.
“I never thought something like this would happen to me. You hear stories all the time but when it happens you can’t quite believe it.
“My daughter could have eaten the whole caterpillar. I just don’t understand how they missed it in the first place.
“It was very large and grey and stood out from the green lettuce and white mayonnaise.”
Staff at the fast food chain believe the creature came from their lettuce supplier.
A spokesman for KFC said: “KFC Great Britain Ltd takes all issues regarding food safety very seriously and apologises for this isolated incident.
“We are conducting a full investigation into this incident, as on this occasion it would appear that a small caterpillar was not removed in the cleaning process.
“Like many supermarkets and other retailers, our salad arrives fresh, pre-washed and packed direct from our supplier.
“While we find this unacceptable, it is important to note that it poses no health risk whatsoever”
