"I am embarrassed to be a representative of a party that has a Minister like Francis Maude".
That is from Conservative MP Gordon Henderson, who has claimed Government Minister Mr Maude was "stupid" to suggest drivers stockpile fule in jerry cans in case of a tanker driver strike.
The Sheppey backbencher continued his onslaught, saying the Cabinet Office minister "obviously has more intelligence than he has common sense".
He was speaking just days after forecourts across the country ran dry or suffered huge tailbacks - and petrol prices surged to record levels.
Tanker drivers were put on overtime to cope with demand - even though a strike hadn't yet been called.
Mr Henderson added: "It was right and proper to say there is a possibility of a strike, but ultimately people are sensible enough to work things out for themselves.
"To suggest people start hoarding petrol was a really stupid remark and, to be fair, Francis Maude has apologised.
"It’s all very well to apologise after you’ve been stupid but it’s better to think first."
The rush on fuel started last Wednesday, and saw drivers going to extraordinary late-night lengths to fill-up.
Tanker drivers are concerned their terms and conditions could deteriorate in forthcoming contract negotiations with their employers.
Talks were due to take place tomorrow between trade union Unite and petrol hauliers to reach a resolution.
What do you think? Was Gordon Henderson right to speak out? Or should he have towed the party line and kept quiet? Join the debate below.
