A KENT MP who served in the first Gulf war has questioned why British troops need to be moved to back-up American forces in Iraq.

Faversham and Mid Kent MP Hugh Robertson (Con) said he could not support the deployment of British soldiers while ministers refused to explain why it was necessary.

The MP is among a growing number from all parties unhappy at the prospect of a redeployment of troops. He said ministers had yet to answer key questions and been unfair to both soldiers and their families.

“The Defence Minister Geoff Hoon’s statement about this was totally devoid of any detail and gave no-one any reason to support it."

He stressed: "There are complications about moving troops to an area they do not know. And we need to know if we have enough troops to do what is needed. Who will fill the hole we leave behind? Why can’t the Americans provide the troops?”

He would only support the proposal if connected to a particular task and deadline.

The decision would have to be a political one as it potentially involved sending troops to a different region.

“If we send troops to a different sector, that will be an extension of our mandate and our role.”

Meanwhile, Chatham and Aylesford Labour MP Jonathan Shaw said he, too had qualms.

“It is not that unusual a request but I quite see why people are wondering if it is connected to the Presidential election. I understand that view but it would be wrong to jump to conclusions.”
