Two Kent MPs have rallied behind the beleaguered Home Secretary Amber Rudd who is facing calls to quit over immigration targets.
A memo leaked to The Guardian appeared to suggest that she knew about her department’s targets for cutting immigration.
She has denied seeing the memo and is due to make a statement to the Commons on Monday.
Tonbridge and Malling MP Tom Tugendhat, who chairs the influential all party foreign affairs select committee, said that Ms Rudd should be allowed to get on with the job.
He tweeted: “I’ve been quick to criticise the unfair treatment of #WindrushFamilies but the question now is how to sort it out fast. @AmberRuddHR knows the details and needs to be left to get on with it. We don’t need more delays.”
Meanwhile the Ashford MP Damian Green, a former immigration minister also leant his support, tweeting:
“Immigration policy is always complex and difficult. @AmberRuddHR is exactly the right person to work this through.”
In a series of tweets responding to the leaked memo, Ms Rudd said she had not seen it and apologised for not being aware of the objectives.
She added she would make a statement to the House of Commons in response to "legitimate questions" about illegal migration.
In the tweets, she repeated her claim that she “wasn’t aware of specific removal targets”, adding: “I accept I should have been and I’m sorry that I wasn’t.”
