SEVERAL million pounds have been left to the Kent branch of the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) by Westgate-on-Sea benefactor Arthur Ivor Read.

Mr Read, who died last December leaving an estate valued at £15,755,745 net, was a staunch supporter of the organisation since 1989. Every year he sent the Kent CPRE half a rent of some of the property which he owned.

Dr Hilary Moorby, the Kent branch chairman said: "This means a great deal to us especially at a time when money for charities is not abundant. This very large legacy should ensure that the work of CPRE Kent will continue and expand for the forseeable future.''

The actual amount will not be known for some considerable time as it involves the sale of a number of properties.

Mr Read also made bequests in the form of shares in his estate to the Ivor Read Charity. The Royal Star and Garter Home for Disabled Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen, the National Trust and £5,000 to St James Church, Garlinge, Margate.
