Lee Nelson’s latest tour is bigger than ever and not just because he is bringing his “fat legend” best mate Omelette. Chris Price had a 'qwaliteeeee’ chat with him.
As cheery introductory exchanges go at the start of an interview, the nation’s favourite chav Lee Nelson takes first prize.
“Chrissy boy. How you doing my man?” begins the star off BBC3’s Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show, unfazed by my tired response that I’m having a busy day.
“I’m sorry you are such a busy popular man,” bounces back south London’s finest.
“Don’t worry, we will sort you out for a sweet interview.”
As the conversation progresses, there is an elephant in the room. The man I am actually speaking to is the stand up Simon Brodkin, who created the character of Lee Nelson. Yet ever since Sacha Baron Cohen took interviews as Ali G, Borat and Bruno, it has opened the door for comics to speak in character in interviews, deflecting actual questions about their real lives.
Never the less, Simon Brodkin as Lee Nelson is very good value. It might be hard to get to know someone talking to you as a “Bermondsey boy” when they are in fact a former doctor but with this kind of banter, it is easy to get past caring.
The comedian is heading out on Lee Nelson’s Well New Tour, which this year sees Lee take along his best mate and “fat legend” Omelette.
“We are having the party of our lives” beamed Lee. “Every day we are on the tour bus, with me sitting on the left and Omelette on the right until we turn left and then we have to swap sides.
“Being a fat legend, Omelette is loving the attention. The girls are loving him. We could only afford a 24 seater tour bus so I’ve got him on a strict 35,000 calories a day tour diet. He has never looked so good.
“The best place so far has probably been this girl’s house in Derby. It was after the show and she gave me a show of her own if you know what I’m sayin’. The worst place has got to be Norwich. That place doesn’t even have a Nandos. I couldn’t believe it.”
Viewers of Lee’s show might be sorry to hear that some of Simon’s other characters Jason Bent and Dr Bob will not be part of the show but Lee hinted they might have their own outings next year. “Let’s see what 2012 brings,” he said.
Yet his comedy gameshows and audience banters will feature aplenty when he visits Tunbridge Wells and Margate, inevitably prompting cries of “do it, do it do it” and his own catchphrase “qwaliteeeeeee!”
With this kind of quick banter, it is sure to be a good show:
Who is your idol?
Ryan Giggs. Ever since I found out about him and Imogen Thomas I thought 'what a legend.’
Do you ever plan on settling down?
Never. You know there is too much fun to be had in being irresponsible.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
Hopefully I’ll be a great grandad.
What is your motto in life?
My motto in life is excess all areas. You know me, it’s fifth gear all the time. I don’t care if I’m on stage or off stage. I’m just having a laugh.
Lee Nelson’s Well New Tour comes to Tunbridge Wells’ Assembly Hall Theatre on Tuesday, November 1. Catch him at Margate’s Winter Gardens on Friday, November 4.
