All together now - aahh!

This little cutey is one of the latest additions at Quarter House Alpacas in Wittersham.

After almost 12 months of gestation, some of the six cria - baby alpacas - have arrived at the select small breeding facility.

Jane Burnett, from Quarter House Alpacas (QHA), said: “Bonnie gave birth first to Humph, sired by Marmite, a very exciting birth as it our first QHA stud mating.

“From the start, he was a livewire and within a week was very happy to wander off on his own and occasionally amble back to mum for a snack.

“Humph’s birth was rapidly followed by Hebe, a beautiful brown girl born to Kim, a very special bundle as Kim lost her baby last year.

“Then Hopi arrived. She is our first white cria born to Twiggy - the first alpaca born on the farm three years ago.”

She added: “The herd accepts the cria very easily, although when the birth happens there are many 'aunties’ available to assist in the process.

“The births generally happen in the morning to allow the baby to dry and be on its feet and have its first feed of colostrum before bedtime, emulating life on the altiplano in the Andes in South America. The cria will stay with their mothers for about six months until weaned.”
